Burlington-Betty Iola Burnette Martin, age 92 went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family. She was a native of Alamance County and the wife of 69 years to Leonard "Lynn" William Martin who survives. Iola was employed with Tower Hosiery Mills and later retired from Dorado Sock. She was the longest living member of Martin's Chapel Baptist Church and a member of the Missionary Circle. Iola was an exceptional cook and she had many interests including crocheting, needle point embroidering, working puzzles and growing flowers. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her husband of the home; daughters, Barbara Jean Martin of Burlington; Beverly M. Graves of the home; Patricia A. Mebane of Burlington and Sheila Martin Jeffries and husband, Randy of Gibsonville; son, Gregory L. Martin of Burlington; ten grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and 3 special nieces, Kay White, Ricky Mebane and Linda Trotter. She was preceded in death by her parents, Donnie L. and Bertha Jeffries Burnette; sister, Mamie Mebane and brothers, Harvey, Ralph, Luther, Clemon and Victor "Bo" Burnette and granddaughter, Yolanda A. Martin. The Martin family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Liberty Commons, Liberty Hospice Care and Advanced Home Care for their kind and compassionate care for Iola during her illness. A service to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, March 16, 2015, at 12 noon at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ronald Brooks and Rev. Robert Jarrell and the burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 until 4 pm on Sunday and 10:45 until 11:45 am on Monday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the Occoneechee Band of the Saponi Nation, OBSN.org.
