Betty Isley Melvin passed from this life to her eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 13, 2014, after two months of failing health. Betty was born December 7, 1923 to the late Newton and Berta Holt Isley, the fifth of seven children. A graduate of Liberty High School at age 16, she then attended McClungs Business College in Greensboro, NC. Betty worked seven years for Gilmore's Nursery in Julian, NC and forty years as secretary for the Home Economics Agents in the Cooperative Extension Service, retiring in 1987. Betty was married for 62 years to the late Stanley H. Melvin who died in 2007. They lived a happy life of giving and sharing in their family, church and community. They also traveled extensively in the US before and after retirement. Betty was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Burlington where she taught the kindergarten Sunday School class, sang in the choir and was an active member of the Senior Citizens Group, Thirty-nine and Holding. Betty was known for her greeting card ministry. She sent greeting cards of all kinds to everyone who might be cheered by one. She is survived by sisters; Jean Kermit Pike of Burlington, Edith W. E. Overman of Liberty, and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two special friends and caregivers, Judy Henderson and Scott Long. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, were sisters; Helen Cheek, Dorothy Pickett and Annie Dare Cheek and brother, Wayne Isley. A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 PM Saturday at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 2331 La Vista Drive, Burlington by Rev. Kjersti L. Lockhart. Visitation will be from 1:00 -1:45 in the church parlor. Burial will follow at Dr. Clyde M. Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Emmanuel United Methodist Church or Hospice and Palliative Care, 914, Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington.
