Betty Lou Underwood Garrison

Betty Lou Underwood Garrison, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family. A native of Caswell County, she was born to the late Genie Roy and Ruth Estelle Aldridge Underwood.

With a loving heart she raised two daughters, Carol Edmonds and Diane Edmonds (deceased). She had one granddaughter, Charla Ireland Cozart (Christopher) and two great- grandsons, Christopher Hunter Cozart and Nicholas Paul Cozart, all who meant the world to her. By her example, she taught us to be kind, work hard, to give selflessly and always strive to do the right thing. We will always remember her laughing and telling us not to step out of line or she would “whop us with a wet squirrel”.

Betty loved to tell stories about her childhood growing up on the family farm with her siblings, William Leroy Underwood, Harry Genie Underwood, James “Jimmy” Steven Underwood (deceased) and Deborah Underwood Cox (Charles). She had many stories of working in the tobacco fields on hot summer days, helping her momma and grandmas in the kitchen and riding to town in Model T and Model A Fords with her siblings and cousins.

She passed on to us her love of travel and leaves us memories of her adventurous spirit; from her love of trips out West to visit the National Parks, hiking on glaciers in Alaska, riding camels on her trip to the Holy Land, exploring Europe and even riding whitewater rapids in her 80’s. She enjoyed any opportunity to go somewhere and try something new.

Betty loved her church family at Altamahaw Baptist church where she was a faithful member for over 60 years. She was a volunteer in her community and worked hard all her life in the textile and hosiery mills. After “retirement” she worked in the nursing home industry. She did not always have an easy life, but her deep faith helped her get through the hard times.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Jacob L Edmonds, Jr. and Edward David Garrison, parents, daughter, Diane Lynn Edmonds and brother, James “Jimmy” Steven Underwood.

A service to celebrate Betty’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, June 17, 2022 at Altamahaw Baptist Church by Rev. Walter Jones with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of her sister Deborah Cox 3708 Stoney Creek Church Rd. Elon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 411 W 5th St # A, Burlington, NC 27215.
