On September 11, 2018, Beth Stuart Gurley, wife, mother, daughter, and sister, went to be with the Lord after a long struggle with cancer. Beth was 62 years old and had been battling metastatic breast cancer for six years. She died in her home surrounded by friends and family. Beth will be forever remembered by her husband and best friend Jim, their beloved "Gurley girls" Meredith, Kathryn, and Sara and their spouses, her parents Robert and Pattie, and her sisters Judy and Amy and their families. She will also be forever remembered by her wonderful friends, St. Mark's Church family, and Bible study women who met weekly to study God's word and share life together for over 20 years.
Beth was born in Burlington on October 1, 1955. Though she met her husband Jim while living in Greensboro, they decided to return to Burlington in 1994 to raise their three girls. Beth worked at AT&T for 20 years as a Certified Public Accountant before she felt the Lord calling her to start a ministry for marginalized families in the Alamance County area. Following that calling, Beth attended Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and received her Masters in Christian Counseling. Armed with that training and the help of her church family, Beth and Jim founded Step Up of Alamance, a nonprofit providing housing and life-coaching to local families trapped in the cycle of generational poverty. To date, the organization has helped many marginalized families experience stability, support, and upward mobility - many for the first time in their lives.
Beth was characterized by her zest for life, love of learning, and passion to make a difference. She was a devoted follower of Christ and a loving wife and mother. Her greatest priority was always her family. She enjoyed vacations to the beach and was very involved in her church. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, though her legacy lives on through the lives of everyone she touched.
A celebration of Beth's life will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 2:00pm, weather permitting, with a visitation with the family immediately following. The funeral and visitation will be held at St. Mark's Church, 1230 St. Mark's Church Rd., Burlington, NC. If plans change due to weather, the family will share updates in the newspaper and on the Lowe Funeral Home website and Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family would be greatly encouraged by donations to:
