Barbara Jean Garrett Gant

April 7, 1937 — January 24, 2025

Burlington

Barbara Jean Garrett Gant, born on April 7, 1937, in Rockingham County, left this world peacefully on January 24, 2025, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. A cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and sister, Barbara filled the lives of those around her with warmth and love.

As a dedicated inspector at West Point Stevens, Barbara exemplified hard work and commitment throughout her career. But it was her family that remained at the center of her world. She devoted her life to nurturing her daughters, Cassandra Hall (Stephen) and Gwen Speaks, who will forever remember her unwavering support and boundless love. Barbara found immense joy in her role as a grandmother to Tanyette Smith and Stephen Hall, Jr., and she was equally proud of her role as a great-grandmother to Ilena Hall, Stephen Hall III, Chelsea Smith, and Briana Smith. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her grandchildren, who carry forward the values and love she instilled in them.

Barbara had a bright personality, and it was the simple joys that brought her happiness. She loved gathering with family around the dinner table, cooking for family and friends, and cherishing the moments spent on phone calls with loved ones. She was a lifelong member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Reidsville, where she served as senior usher, sang in the choir and was a member of The United Methodist Women. Over the years, attending gospel music events with her late husband became one of her favorite pastimes, allowing her to revel in the melodies and messages that resonated deeply with her faith.

Barbara is survived by her sisters, Margaret Scales, Jackie McCoy, and Marilyn Spruiell (Henry), as well as her brothers, James Garrett (Joyce) and F. Rayfield Garrett (Yvonne). These siblings shared a bond with Barbara that was enriched by laughter and shared memories.

While we celebrate the incredible life Barbara led, we also remember those who preceded her in death: her father, John Scales; her mother, Sarah Alice Garrett; her beloved husband, Robert Gant; her sister, Sadie Garland; her brother, Kenneth Scales; and her son-in-law, Danny Speaks. They remain in her memory and the hearts of those she loved.

Barbara’s presence will be greatly missed. Friends and family are invited to honor her life during the visitation 12:00-12:45PM on Thursday, January 30, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 420 Mizpah Church Road, Reidsville, NC 27320. Barbara will be available for viewing on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 from 2:00-5:00 PM at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. May the love and lessons shared by Barbara Jean Garrett Gant continue to inspire and guide us all.
