Gibsonville, NC Angelica "Angie" Navarrete Rubio, age 69, passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center. She was a native of Lima, Peru and she is survived by her husband of 42 years Tulio Augusto Rubio. Angie retired from Washington State Hospital as a social worker after many years and was of the Catholic faith. She was a fabulous cook who taught a cooking class for beginning mothers for several years. Everyone around her was always a benefactor of her cooking talents and never left hungry. She contributed to the restaurant in the Peruvian Pavillion during World Expo '86 held in Vancouver, Canada bringing attention to her specialty "Tamales". Angie received positive reviews by both Vancouver and Seattle newspapers as a result of the World Expo. She also took 1st prize in many cooking contests for her Spanish dishes especially "Paella". She loved to travel and especially enjoyed spending time at the beach for she had a passion for the ocean. Her family was the pride and joy of her life and she devoted herself to them. Survivors include her husband, Tulio Augusto Rubio of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Steve Hughes of Elon; son, Edward Tulio Rubio of Tacoma, Washington; grandson, Joshua Dane Hughes of Elon; sister, Martha "Coco" Navarrete of Burnaby, British Columbia; brother and sister-in-law, Hector "Tito" and Augusta Navarrete of Graham, Washington; special niece, Monica Blaustein and a special nephew, George Anderson; numerous other nieces, nephews and aunts; a special cousin, Kelly McNulty and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hector Ignacio Navarrete Arrestegui and Juana Leon Navarrete; sister, Tula Navarrete. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. at People's Memorial Christian Church by Toby Mullis and Dennis Fields. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and other times at the home of her daughter. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
