Alfred M. Allred, Jr., 91, of Maple Ave. passed away on Sunday, February 14, 2010 at the Hospice Home after several months of failing health. He has left us to be with his wife of 52 years in heaven who went to be with the Lord in 1998. He and his wife were long time members of Grove Park Baptist Church where in the last several years he especially enjoyed handing out programs and meeting everyone before the Sunday morning services. He worked almost his entire life in the textile industry and was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. He loved children and said on many occasions that some of the most satisfying years of his life were the 16 years he served as school crossing guard after he retired. He is survived by his only child and son, Doyle "Chip" Allred and wife Patti and half-sisters, Doritha Howell and Louise Thompson, all of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Libby, sister, Clara Mae McGowan, brother, Fred Allred, half-brothers, Richard and Don Allred and his parents, Alfred and Myrtle Allred. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Hunsinger and Rev. Bill Vickrey. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Allred will be laid to rest beside his wife Libby at Alamance Memorial Park. There will be no graveside service.
