Al was born in Eden, North Carolina to the late Albert Roy Cox, Sr. (Roy) and Evelyn Marshall Cox. He was an elite football player at Morehead High School and Elon University. Al served in the Army and the Vietnam War. While working for Karastan Carpet, in New York City Al met his wife Pamela. Al’s career quickly progressed in the flooring industry where he held Executive VP roles at George. T. Wood & Sons, Inc., and Mannington Carpet. During his tenure with Mannington Mills, Inc., he served as Executive Vice President of the carpet division and later President/CEO of the ceramic tile division, also serving on the Mannington Mills, Inc., Board of Directors. Pam and Al have lived in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina where Al and Pam owned and operated a retail and installation flooring company in Hilton Head Island. Al served on the boards of various trade organizations. Wherever they lived, he was actively involved and engaged in the local community and organizations. An avid outdoorsman and golfer, Al also enjoyed reading, and spending time with family and friends. Al embodied a rare combination of strong character and incredible joy. He will be remembered for his love of family and friends, humility, great loyalty and integrity, constant fun and laughter, passion for life and consistent optimism, commitment to hard work, and unique rich stories.
In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his Mother-in-Law, Philomena ‘Flo’ DiMeo.
He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Pamela DiMeo Cox. Together Al and Pam have three children, Michele; Gail Coltrane and her husband, Sol of Lexington, NC; Heather Loeffelholz and her husband Greg of Hanover, MA. Al and Pam have six grandchildren, Brady, Will, and Emma Coltrane of Lexington, NC; and Ella, Sophie, and Greyson Loeffelholz of Hanover, MA. In addition to his immediate family, Al is survived by his sister Bonnie Lenox and her husband Al of Virginia Beach, VA , and brother Lonnie Cox of Richmond VA.
A private memorial service will be held, followed by celebration of life at a later date. Lowe Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.
